Inspired by a simple fix on an old sauna ladle handle, Heiki (named after the man who invented the fix) are freehand blown containers, soft and bulbous, each a one-off with a unique wooden handle. Developed upon a wish by a Parisian gallery, the Heiki Mini were launched in Spring 2018 as the adorable little version of the Heiki vases.

Origins : the glass is freehand blown in England by an artist glassblower, and the wood handle is crafted and adjusted in Germany.

Dimensions : H. 17-20cm, dia. 12cm

Little + : the U&U bird is stamped at the bottom of the glass.
Each Mini Heiki comes into a White box and a U&U tote-bag, the perfect assortment under the Christmas tree.

More secrets about the making : the challenge of the Heikis are the holes drilled into the glass, and the use of two solid clear glass colours. When working with multiple glass colours it is important to pay attention to their individual expansion and melting points. All aspects need to be taken into consideration when a couple of holes are drilled and stretched into the final shape. The skill is to keep the balance right by keeping the texture of both colours evenly. It has to stay hot enough to stay attached to the blowing iron and malleable enough to make the shape of the holes and keep them until the glass has cooled, all while blowing and turning the glass continuously. In the end, the Heiki vases look shamelessly effortless. (words by Mareike Besch)
