Material Deceptions / Exploring the Properties of Paper, Concrete, Brass, and Wood

In her latest collection, Pia Wüstenberg pushes the boundaries of materiality by using familiar substances in surprising and innovative ways. Material Deceptions explores the transformation of everyday materials—paper, concrete, brass, and wood—into unexpected forms that defy their traditional properties.

Reimagining Materials: Paper, Concrete, and More

Pia’s work is driven by curiosity for deception and surprise. In this collection, materials take on new roles:

  • Paper becomes solid—thin sheets of paper transform into forms that hold color and structure.

  • Concrete softens—typically rough and rigid, it takes on the tactile feel of a satin-soft pillow, while rock-like paper rests on it.

  • Brass and wood are transformed into tactile experiences that engage the senses, resulting in pieces that are both aesthetically playful and physically inviting.

These unexpected material transformations are designed to captivate and challenge perceptions, revealing the beauty and versatility of these everyday materials.

The Role of Materials in Contemporary Culture

In her design practice, Pia is deeply interested in the evolution of crafts and materials in today’s world. Just as early carpenters emerged from the availability of wood in Northern Europe, or potters arose from the clay-rich soils in India, Pia explores how humans respond to the materials available in a world of surplus and waste.

Her work questions how modern culture interacts with and redefines everyday materials. By exploring this connection, Pia invites us to consider sustainability, innovation, and creativity in our contemporary approach to materials.
