Earth and Fire

A Process Rooted in Craft

Our bowls are thrown on a potter’s wheel and shaped entirely by hand. After forming, they go through a two-stage firing process: first a raw bisque firing, then a high-temperature glaze firing. This careful process not only strengthens the ceramic but also enhances its finish and durability.

Precision at Every Stage

Throughout production, we check each bowl’s diameter and roundness, as clay naturally shifts in high heat. During firing, the molecules inside the ceramic remember every movement—like lifting the bowl—which can subtly alter its final shape. Our goal is to maintain that perfect accuracy.

“The molecules inside the bowl are aligned during the throwing process. But any movement—even picking it up—can be remembered and expressed during firing.”

Designed for Harmony

What makes Utopia bowls truly unique is their custom-designed rim and base profiles:

  • The rim is shaped to precisely locate and support a glass vessel.

  • The bottom is designed to cradle its matching wooden base.

Each ceramic form is individually crafted, and all corresponding materials—glass and wood—are made to measure, ensuring seamless function and elegant form.

It takes weeks to complete each ceramic piece, a true testament to slow design and lasting craftsmanship and patients.
