HANDBLOWN GLASS, CZECHIA / woven Makenge, zambia
The Zambia Stacking Vessels are a heartfelt collaboration with refugee women living in UN camps in Zambia. Using traditional skills and locally sourced Makenge root, each artisan weaves unique baskets that perfectly complement our hand-blown glass bases. Every basket reflects the individual style and signature of its maker, celebrating authentic craftsmanship and cultural heritage.
These vessels disassemble into two components: a glass vase and a woven basket, blending natural materials with functional design.
Designed and prototyped in 2023, this collection was created with the kind support of MADE51, empowering refugee artisans through creative collaboration.

coiling TO A DESIGN
For our Zambia collection we work with women accustomed to coiling Makenge baskets, but ask them to follow our template in order to fir the basket to our glass base
Weaving process
In order to weave these baskets for us, the women collect and split the Makenge root. Once the root is split, the material can be coiled into a basket shape by stitching each coil onto the part underneath it.
Splitting
The material is split with a knife and cleaned to a perfect golden shine.
